Not in Love
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
What I loved:
1. Rue’s personality 🌟
2. Eli's dog 💕
3. The deeper tone of the story 🖤
"Not in Love" departs from Hazelwood's usual comedic rom-coms, leaning into deeper emotions and complex relationships. I was pleasantly surprised by this fresh side of her writing. Rue’s no-nonsense attitude was captivating, and I loved how unapologetically she took control of her preferences and boundaries. Eli balanced her perfectly—respecting her choices while gently encouraging her to step outside her comfort zone. Their chemistry was dynamic, and their quirks played off each other beautifully.
The forbidden, secretive nature of their relationship added an extra layer of tension, making their moments together all the more satisfying. While the romance was the star, the subplot involving Rue’s strained relationship with her brother added depth to her character, though it did grow frustrating at times as she avoided tackling the issue head-on. The other frustrating part was the Kline vs. Harkness plot. I didn't feel satisfied with how it ended.
This story is equal parts heart and science, balancing an intriguing workplace romance with moments of vulnerability and growth. It’s not quite the lighthearted read Hazelwood is known for, but it’s a compelling exploration of loyalty, ambition, and love in the face of adversity.
