Caraval
“Caraval” is a mesmerizing world where magic, mystery, and illusion intertwine in a whirlwind adventure. Garber’s debut novel invites readers to a spectacle unlike any other—where reality blurs with fantasy, and secrets hide behind every mask.
I loved the concept of Caraval—a once-a-year game where participants can experience an unbelievable performance—which holds immense promise. I am a sucker for a book where the characters have to play a game to win. The setting was depicted beautifully and made me feel like I was there. Also, the chemistry between Scarlett and Julian was filled with delectable banter and tension. Their partnership, fueled by secrets and hidden agendas, adds depth to the story.
What I loved:
The Enchanting Setting
The Premise
Scarlett + Julian
While the game’s unpredictability is part of its allure, I felt that at times, the plot feels like a maze without a map. It was hard to find my footing in the story when Scarlett's search for the "clues" felt like she stumbled into them most of the time. Additionally, Scarlett’s impulsive decisions occasionally frustrated me—her lack of foresight and failure to ask crucial questions felt like she was blinded by her desire to find her sister. I kept wanting to tell her to "stop and think!"
In the end, “Caraval” succeeds in its wild and confusing journey, mirroring the very event it portrays. If you’re willing to surrender to the chaos, you’ll love this book and its magical setting.
