Check & Mate
In this YA romance, Mallory is pulled back into the world of chess after a charity tournament win against Nolan, the reigning Chess World Champion. Let's just say things spark between them, and Mallory doesn't know how to handle it.
This story started strong, and I loved the chemistry between Nolan and Mallory. The chess setting was fun, and the competition plot made the story engaging.
What I loved:
Nolan
The chess backdrop (Even though it went over my head)
Oz
However, my frustration grew with Mallory's tendency to jump to conclusions, and the abrupt ending left me wanting more closure. So much built up to it that I was disappointed when we didn't see it unfold. Also, her sister Sabrina KILLED ME, and I didn't like her friend Easton. Ugh.
Despite these issues, the novel has its charms, blending the intensity of chess with the sparks of romance. Nolan makes it work reading.
